What Airline Allows More Than 1 Lightweight Travel Bag?

Airline allowance for lightweight carry travel bags is a subject often discussed but largely misunderstood. Most passengers hate the idea of going through the entire process of checking-in and claiming their travel luggage.

The reason is not very complicated. Apart from time-consuming, passengers find it so tedious. Moreover, passengers try to avoid the risk of losing their luggage. Given a choice, many would prefer taking their possessions on board, just to keep an eye on their luggage.

To ensure safety in air travel, Air Transport Association (IATA) has no choice except to chip in with some guidelines to regulate airlines. However, it needs to be clarified that these guidelines are not mandatory. What is obviously clear is only lightweight carry-on luggage can be taken on board.

Having no enforcement measures in place has kept the exact sizes of airline carry-on luggage remain hidden beneath a shroud of secrecy. This has left a loophole for airlines to tweak the allowance sizes to suit their own circumstances.

Therefore, in some airlines, the size and weight limits of lightweight carry luggage are dependent on the aircraft model or the booking class.

One of the things my website is thriving to do is to help travellers enjoy stress-free trips. How? I do this in several ways. Giving hints and tips that have been widely researched, is one of them. Also, by sharing product reviews and people’s testimonies, to draw lessons from.

In this post, I will share with you my personal travel experiences during my recent trip with Ethiopian Airways. Overall, I had such a pleasant flight. One of the reason is I could take on board more than 1 bag and that went down very well with me. I least expected it.

Ethiopian Airline’s offers of a cheap flight at the time of my travel lured me. I ended up buying a ticket at a bargain price. Since my aim was to get a cheap flight, I travelled in the Economy Class. A perfect bargain for my low budget. All passengers on Ethiopian Economy Class were allowed:

To take on board 2 bags. The first and second checked bag was free. Conditions were: the weight of 1 bag should not exceed 23 kg (50 lbs)/158 cm (62 inches) max. In addition, passengers can take1 piece Carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 7kgs.

I used to be a nervous flyer, so I was cautious to select a seat that is over the wing section. Flying experts say it is the most stable area of the plane in terms of turbulence. Surprisingly, it worked. I felt at ease throughout my whole journey.

Ethiopian Airline encourages its passengers to check-in in plenty of time. At least 3 hours before departure time. This allows the passenger plenty of extra time to check-in and to pass through security. Extra baggage weight is charged for £10.00 per 1 kilogram. Fortunately, I had prepared enough not to part away with money for extra baggage.

My travel itinerary took me to Addis Ababa before connecting to Harare International Airport. It was a very long flight. It took us 10 hours. To make matters worse, we delayed landing for almost 30 minutes due to severe weather.

The adverse weather conditions, with rain pour, prevented us from landing at Addis Ababa Airport at the exact time. Thankfully, we managed in the end. To say the least, this was the unnerving part of the trip.

Ethiopian Airline Itinerary Adventures

  1. Departure: London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2 at 9:00 pm
  2. Arrival: Adds Ababa Airport – Ethiopia at 6:35 am
  3. Departure: Adds Ababa – Ethiopia at 9:25
  4. Arrival: Harare International Airport 12:25 pm

For my return trip to the UK, I passed through Addis Ababa to connect a plane to Heathrow Airport. However, the weirdest thing with my itinerary is my flight was scheduled to depart from Harare International Airport at 2:00 am.

At first, I thought the airline had made a gross mistake. I later found out, after crosschecking, that it was the correct time, no mix-up. It put me in a very awkward position. I had to travel to the airport in the middle of the night.

The plane later departed for the UK from Addis Ababa after stopping over for 2 hours. I spent the entire day travelling and arrived at Heathrow Airport exactly on time, at 5.00 pm.

Is Ethiopian Airlines the Best In The World?

Ethiopian Airlines is the one to watch. It came out at number 48 at the recent 2017 World’s Airline Awards held in Paris. This is a massive improvement compared to last year when it was number 76.

Did you know Ethiopian Airlines is a multi-award winner?

To kill time during my flight I picked one of the magazines left out for passengers and began to read. You will be surprised to hear some of the things I read for the first time.

I didn’t know Ethiopian Airlines was feted as Africa’s leading airline brand and that the airline continuously works hard to give its customers the best possible travel experience. Also, Ethiopian Airlines boasts of a fleet of planes, an Airbus and a Boeing plane.

The Boeing plane travels on a global scale to America, Europe, and the Middle East. On top, it has received recognition from reputable organizations through awards:

  1. Outstanding Food Service Award
  2. Cargo Airline Award for Network development

  3. African Cargo Airline Award

Ethiopian Airlines operates the Youngest Fleet in Africa giving excellent to passengers. For instance, passengers are provided with pillows and soft breathable blankets.

In addition, it offers comfortable economy class seats with the latest Flight entertainment. It’s one among a few airlines that offer a stellar entertainment service. It allows passengers to watch Netflix during flights.

While on board on this airline, you travel in style watching an array of films, TV programmes, and music. Whilst aboard this airline, you have also presented a moving map with a wealth of information, at a touch of the screen.

In addition, Ethiopian Airlines has an Ethiopian Aviation Academy. The scale of maintenance and repairs is said to be breathtaking.

Lessons Learned

The BIG lesson I learned is to be thoroughly prepared! If I had checked my travel itinerary, I would have noticed my weird departure time for the Return trip. Perhaps, I could have done something about it.

I learned never to take things for granted and leave things to assumption. All necessary preparations need to be done thoroughly. It was a challenging time for my mates who escorted me to the airport in the middle of the night, quite a long-distance travel from where they live.

Hopefully, you found something to learn from my travel experiences. Please feel free to leave some comments below. Also, leave questions you may have related to, ‘Lightweight Travel Bags.’ I will be more than happy to get back to you as soon as I can with some answers.

Hi, Femia, thanks for explaining in detail what to expect when flying with Ethiopian Airlines. I’m really impressed with the airline’s standards of excellency.
I also have learned a big lesson. Never to turn up at the airport for a trip without making adequate preparations.
If I were you, I don’t think I would have managed to catch a flight at 2:00am.
I will travel with the Ethiopian Airlines next time. More than 1 Lightweight Carry Luggage is awesome.

Thank you, Norah, for your comments. I am humbled you took your time to e able to respond.
I am sure the time you will travel with Ethiopian Airlines, you will not regret.
Ethiopian Airlines is the only African operator of an Airbus.

Thank you I never thought about traveling to Ethiopia or that they would have such a excellent airline. i think some of the challenges you describe with the delay, travel times and planning are the new normal. Many people i know get caught up in security too. How was that handled? Did you feel safe? Since Ethiopia is known for its tasty “ethnic” food i was wondering if they served any on he plane or if it was just the basics? Again thanks for this article i really enjoyed reading it.

Hello, Nancy, thank you very much for taking your time to leave some comments.
I had forgotten to mention security checks which consume a great chuck of time. We had our baggage checked at the Addis Ababa Airport. There was a queue but the process went quick.

In terms of food, the Ethiopian Airways recently introduced a new menu. They are now serving Chinese, Indian to Italian food. They also sell duty free stuff to support the training of doctors.

I travel a lot and this really gives me a few things to think about. I am impressed with the good things you say about Ethopian Airlines. I think some of our North American airlines could certainly take a few notes from them (in my experience anyway). Also, you’re right about being prepared. Weird departure and arrival times and stop overs have completely ruined my travel experience at times. Thanks for the reminder. I did not know about the IATA guidelines. I often wondered why the rules always changed on me for different flights. Thanks for the tips. Do you have an airline preference when traveling to, or in North America?

Hello, Brad, thank you very much for taking time from your busy schedule to leave some comments. I appreciate.

I am glad you found my post informative. I have not traveled to North America before. I have a friend who has relatives who live in North America. Each time she visits them she prefers Air Canada. She says its one of the best airlines including the Delta Air Lines.

    Hi Femia,

Ethiopian airlines sound like a very nice and pleasant airline. Although I have never travelled to Ethiopia you make the journey sound so interesting.

Maybe you should have titled it Ethiopian Airlines a Great Journey. I think the bonus here is two carry luggage on board that is a first.

Hello, Khayyam, thank you so much for taking your time to leave some comments. I had a pleasant trip which was slightly marred by delays experienced during connect over period.
Ethiopian airlines’ carry on light weight luggage policy is quite relaxed. I totally agree with you I should have titled this post, ‘Ethiopian Airlines – A Great Journey.’
      Many thanks, for stopping by.
